Featured Magazine Carving

Happy news! I just started a new carving that will be featured in the Fall edition of a Fox Chapel magazine. They are the publishers of both Woodcarving Illustrated and Scrollsaw Woodcarving & Crafts.

My carvings have been previously featured in both magazines, and now they've asked me to do a full tutorial on the special techniques I use to get three layers of depth in a blank that is only one quarter inch thick.

I'm honored and delighted to have the opportunity to share the how-to with more folks. Tutorials from previous carvings can be found on this blog, but they don't show the secret technique for creating the depth. You'll have to wait for the magazine for that.

Top Pick for Holiday Gifts

I'm very excited to tell you that Heartwood Art carvings got Top Pick in Holiday Gifts That Don't Suck list on Examiner.com!

The author of the column, Judith Yates, also runs the Bohemian Nashville! MeetUp group, which includes a diverse membership of performing and visual artists. It's a great way to meet other artists in the 'hood and they also host/list upcoming shows in which members participate.

Invitation for Full Feature Tutorial

I've just received an invitation to do a full-featured spread for Fox Chapel Publishing, which produces Woodcarving Illustrated and Scrollsaw, Woodcarving & Crafts magazines. The feature will be a 3-5 page tutorial on carving trees, much like the tutorials you've seen posted on this blog.

I've also been invited to be posted in a tutorial segment of the premier Russian carving magazine. I'll post links for that when they become available.

Frames With Character

Another Heartwood Art carving will soon be featured in Woodcarving Illustrated. To celebrate, a new Follow My Carving series is on the way. This time I'll be using standard picture framing instead of making my own.

There are a lot of great old frames with "character" just waiting to be picked up on the cheap at a yard sale then recycled into a work of art. The ones in this picture were collected by my good friend, Connie Weaver, who owns S & S Framing here in Nashville. She has been very generous with her time in helping me figure out ways to use standard framing for an upcoming instructional feature for magazines that will publish next year. She gave me this collection of frames that will be used for a few smaller carvings she'll dispaly in her gallery. I'll be creating those before the end of the year.

But, the next carving on the drawing board is another big tree. It's wonderfully gnarly with lots of turns and crooks in the limbs plus bunches of knotholes. The wood for it should arrive soon. Del Craft hand-picks all the blanks for my tree carvings. He's in Colorado and is sending me some nice birch and soft maple.

Check back here on the blog often, or sign up for the RSS feed to be notified when I start the next series and watch the tree being made from start to finish. This is one of the few carvings that will be available for purchase in the 2009 series.

The Might Oak has been sold

This stunning carving has just been sold. It is currently being featured in the 2009 Winter edition of Scrollsaw, Woodcarving & Crafts magazine. It was also the first in the Follow My Carving series featured on the Heartwood Art site, where you can see the carving as it was being made from start to finish. While you're there, you can also see the Gaia carving that is currently being made.

The Home page highlights another round tree carving that will be featured in the 2009 Summer edition of Woodcarving Illustrated.
